Anthropic has launched a beta version of Claude for Word, an extension that brings the AI assistant directly into Microsoft Word’s sidebar. The feature is available to Team and Enterprise subscribers and lets you draft, edit, and review documents without leaving the application.
Claude for Word operates at the document model level, preserving original formatting and showing edits as native tracked changes. This approach lets users review each modification before accepting it.
The integration supports shared context across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, maintaining a single conversation while you work across different files. Claude also responds to comments embedded in the document, suggesting targeted revisions for specific sections. According to Anthropic, the primary use case is in legal work, particularly for contract review and drafting financial memoranda.
The company does caution against using Claude for final documents going to clients or for critical audit cases without thorough human review.
This move rounds out Claude’s expansion into the Microsoft Office ecosystem, following earlier launches for Excel and PowerPoint. The arrival directly in Word represents a direct challenge to Microsoft’s Copilot features, banking on answer quality and transparency around what actually changed in your documents.
