Wine 11.6 landed on April 3rd as the sixth development update in the 11.x series. No major upheaval, but a couple of interesting developments worth tracking if you follow the project.
The most curious involves Android: the team has resumed work on the Android driver, dormant for quite some time. We’re talking about build system changes to support modern Gradle versions and adjustments for recent Android APIs, so this is still early stages, but it signals someone’s decided to pick that thread back up. Back in 2024 there was chatter about running Windows games on Android via Wine with DXVK, VKD3D-Proton and FEX under the codename “Cassia”, but little movement had followed.
On the gaming side, Wine 11.6 improves DLL load-order handling to better support mods, fixes a regression from 11.5 that broke Diablo IV’s in-game shop, and patches crashes tied to ICU DLLs in Cyberpunk 2077.
Among 28 bugs squashed are fixes for Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, Google Earth, HWiNFO 8.24 and Mount & Blade: Warband, plus corrections for StarOffice 5.1, PDFSam and other applications. VBScript compatibility also got some updates, useful for enterprise environments running applications that depend on embedded scripting.
