Kdenlive’s first major release of 2026 arrives with a clear goal: make editing more comfortable, without upending the whole experience. The 26.04.0 update doesn’t introduce flashy features, but anyone who works regularly with this open source video editor will find concrete improvements across nearly every area.

Timeline

Three improvements focus directly on navigation. Hold the middle mouse button and you can scroll continuously, even past the screen edges. The playhead can now lock to the center during playback or manual navigation, so the video scrolls beneath it instead of the other way around. A new button in the status bar lets you choose whether zoom follows the mouse cursor or the playhead.

You can also adjust speed across multiple clips at once, either by Ctrl+dragging directly in the timeline or through a dedicated tool.

Transitions and effects

Transitions now display animated previews in the list, making it much easier to pick the right one without applying it first. Dragging a transition onto a clip automatically adapts it to the clip’s duration. New additions include the Euclid Eraser transition and a fresh heatmap effect. Effect number fields now support mathematical expressions, handy when working with precise values.

Other improvements

Fullscreen mode now includes monitor mirroring, useful with multiple displays or in an editing suite. You can import clips and add them directly to the timeline from the context menu, with automatic duration detection. Rendering can output straight into the project container. Windows users get support for AMF encoding profiles.

Noteworthy fixes include resolved audio capture issues from external hardware, corrected subtitle editing bugs, and improved installation for Whisper and SeamlessM4T plugins.

Kdenlive 26.04.0 is available through the repositories of major Linux distributions, as an AppImage from the official site, and on Flathub.
