Anthropic is moving beyond selling a language model. With Claude Design, launched Friday as a research preview, the company is directly entering the design tools market, long dominated by Figma, Adobe, and Canva. The product, part of Anthropic Labs, generates interactive prototypes, presentations, landing pages, and graphics through conversation, powered by Claude Opus 4.7, the flagship model released the same day.

The timing is deliberate. Three days before the launch, Anthropic’s chief product officer Mike Krieger stepped down from Figma’s board. Figma’s stock dropped 5% that day.

How it works

You describe what you need, Claude generates an initial version, then you refine it through inline comments, direct edits, or auto-generated sliders to adjust colors, typography, and spacing. Companies can upload their own source code and design files, Claude analyzes them, builds a coherent style system, and applies it to every future project. Output options include PDF, PPTX, standalone HTML, or direct export to Canva, which Anthropic has partnered with for roughly two years. There’s also a direct handoff to Claude Code to turn a prototype into working code.

Who it’s for

The tool targets designers wanting to explore more directions faster, but also founders, product managers, and marketing leads who need to communicate something without design expertise. It’s available at claude.ai/design for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers, within your plan’s usage limits.
