Blackmagic Design has taken an unexpected turn with DaVinci Resolve 21, adding a dedicated photo editing section that positions the software as a genuine alternative to Lightroom and similar applications. The public beta is already available for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Photo Page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The main addition is the Photo page, a standalone workspace for importing, organizing, and editing still images. The strength here is that it uses the same node-based color correction system already present in Resolve for video work. This approach lets you build precise adjustments by chaining together correction blocks, applying nodes in sequence, in parallel across different image areas, or sharing them across entire albums to match a whole batch of photos at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All edits are non-destructive, the original file stays untouched, and you work at full resolution throughout. RAW file editing is supported, giving you access to the camera’s raw format and maximum image quality. Available tools include curves, area and color selections, third-party plugins, LUTs, and AI Magic Mask, which isolates people or objects with a click for localized corrections. Worth noting: Magic Mask and Film Look Creator are restricted to the paid Studio version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Library management includes a grid view to browse albums with live previews of corrections, filters for edit status, star ratings, flags, and color labels. Albums organize by shoot date or camera model, and Lightroom catalog import is supported. Compatible Sony and Canon cameras can connect directly to your computer for tethered shooting and import straight into Resolve, with ISO, exposure, and white balance control available within the software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New AI Features for Video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond photo editing, Resolve 21 introduces several AI-powered video features. IntelliSearch lets you find objects within clips, keyword matches in dialogue, or specific faces, useful when working through large media libraries. CineFocus simulates shallow depth of field and focus shifts during playback, effects that typically demand expensive gear or specific shooting setups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New additions also include text-to-speech generation and voice sample synthesis, facial appearance adjustments, automatic skin blemish removal, motion blur reduction, and an improved UltraSharpen to salvage low-quality footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beta Still Has Work Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Version 21 was announced at NAB 2026 and follows Blackmagic’s typical release cycle, with an early beta arriving in spring and the final version expected around September. According to DPReview, the current build has issues with photo export, a sign that refinement continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The free version of DaVinci Resolve 21 will launch alongside the final release. The full Studio version stays at $295, unchanged from the previous edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n
