How Italy’s Transport Infrastructure Is Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks

Guerre di Rete asked Italy’s major transport companies about their cybersecurity measures. Almost none answered. And there are plenty of reasons to worry.

Autostrade per l’Italia, Ferrovie dello Stato, Ita Airways, the port of Genoa, the port of Gioia Tauro. Antonio Piemontese from Guerre di Rete spent months contacting press offices and switchboards at some of Italy’s largest transport infrastructure operators, trying to understand how they protect themselves from cyber attacks. The most common response was silence.

Meanwhile, concrete problems are mounting. In November 2025, a cyber attack hit Almaviva, a tech supplier for Italy’s state railways, stealing 2.3 terabytes of data that reportedly included personal information of passengers and employees. At ports, low-cost surveillance cameras from Chinese manufacturers raise serious questions. And license plate recognition systems that control access to port gates could be manipulated with relative ease.
