Floorp is a Japanese browser built on Firefox, developed by the Ablaze team and distributed as free software. Unlike standard Firefox, it adds a range of features for users who want more control over the interface: side panels, vertical tabs, workspace management, mouse gestures, and extensive customization options. It’s not a massive project, but it has an active community and receives regular updates. Version 12.12.0, based on Firefox 149, introduces two concrete new features.

The first is Zen Mode. When activated, the browser interface strips down to basics, notifications disappear, and you’re left with essentially just the webpage. The idea is to create a more focused browsing environment for anyone who wants to concentrate on content without the browser getting in the way. You can toggle it with a toolbar icon, mouse gesture, or keyboard shortcut.

The second feature is an expanded Split View, available in the experimental Flasco channel. Instead of just two side-by-side panels, you can now use up to four, with three layout options: vertical, horizontal, and grid. The layout state persists after restart. The developers note that this feature will stay in beta for a while given the implementation complexity, and the maximum panel count could increase in the future. Firefox 149 introduced its own Split View, but Floorp extends it with additional options.

Floorp is free to download from its official website. If you use Firefox and want something more flexible without switching engines, it’s worth a look.
