Threema 7.1 for iOS Gets a Fresh Look and Security Upgrades

Threema 7.1 for iOS arrives with Liquid Glass design, a redesigned Contacts section, message forwarding, and security improvements. Here’s what’s new and what you need to run it.

No login, no IP stored.

Threema has rolled out version 7.1 for iOS, an update focused on modernizing the interface and strengthening key features. The messaging app, known for its privacy-first approach and end-to-end encryption, now supports Apple’s Liquid Glass design language, bringing the user experience in line with current iOS aesthetics.

The most visible change is in the Contacts section, which has been completely redesigned for a cleaner, more modern feel. Threema Safe, the built-in secure space for storing sensitive documents, photos, and notes, also received a visual refresh. Beyond appearance, the update adds a practical feature many were waiting for: message forwarding. Users can now relay conversations or individual messages to other contacts or groups more easily, filling a gap that existed in previous versions.

Technical improvements and the end of support for iOS 15 and 16

Version 7.1 also fixes several bugs related to Threema Web connectivity and improves stability when restoring Threema Safe backups. A specific crash that could occur during restoration if the Threema Safe URL was preset via MDM (Mobile Device Management) has been patched, which matters for organizations managing device fleets. The update addresses issues with screenshot sharing, device linking, and storage management.

A heads-up for users on older devices: starting with the next major version, Threema will drop support for iOS 15 and iOS 16. If you’re running these versions, plan ahead for a device or OS upgrade to keep receiving new features and security patches.

The update is free on the App Store for anyone running iOS 17 or later. If you’re looking for a messaging app that actually prioritizes security without sacrificing daily usability, this release marks a meaningful step forward in Threema’s evolution.
